The first ever successful hot air balloon flight was in 1783. They work by filling a very large bag called an envelope with hot air. Hot air is less dense than cold air and so it is floats up like a bubble in water is less dense than the water. Below the bag is a basket called a gondola in which people can be carried.
Hot air balloons are pushed along by the wind but some are self propelled and these are called airships.
Also some balloons do not use hot air but may use gases which are less dense than air such as helium.
